Competition to design the logo for World Masters 2023

The design of the logo for World Rowing Masters 2023, was the result of a logo competition that we ran in the South Africa rowing community. The organising committee voted on the entries and selected three, which were sent through to FISA. The winner of the competition was none other than Ursula Grobler – Olympian and South African national team rower from the lightweight women’s double sculls.

A teaser campaign was then run on Facebook to get the rowing community involved and excited about the launch. The teaser campaign also built the story behind our logo.

When you see our logo the first element that jumps out at you are the brilliant colours! The colours of the logo represent the glorious yellow, orange and red of the African sunset. The colours in the logo also capture the colours of our flag – one of the most recognised flags in the world.

Your eyes then move to the proud, magnificent kudu. The kudu is native to South Africa and we have been lucky enough to see them at Roodeplaat.

Behind our Kudu is the unmistakable Acacia tree, indigenous to South Africa and a ubiquitous sight in Gauteng. The tree is important in traditional African culture where people would meet in the shade of a tree to resolve disputes. It symbolises reconciliation and coming together to resolve differences. Just like sport.

Lastly, the ZigZag will catch your eye. This represents the wealth of arts and crafts in South Africa. The vibrant art forms produced in our rural communities use indigenous materials to make beautiful, richly decorated artefacts for ritual and household purposes.

FISA published a press release in conjunction with the logo launch which you can read here: World Rowing is going to Africa.
